O'Neil was a student at high-school when she auditioned in 2005 for the third Canadian Idol season. She made it into the top 100 rounds due to the fact that judges were awed at her singing performance. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges, however she was a victim of significant loss in the top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals, when she was put into the bottom three and the bottom two spots as well as the bottom two. They were stunned by the results and encouraged viewers to show support for those with great singing talent, like Melissa. O'Neil did not make it to the top 3 after an impressive string of performance. O'Neil and her fellow contestants Rex Goudie and Werner delivered two spectacular performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that reports would claim that O'Neil was able to defeat Goudie and was the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and the youngest winner in time of the show. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her for winning Canadian Idol.
