O'Grady was born in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. She grew up in Wheaton and went to Wheaton North School. She was a graduate in 1981. Before shifting into Los Angeles, she appeared in several commercials. O'Grady began her career modelling at Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She made her debut on the screen with the romantic drama She's Having a Baby in 1988. She later played a regular role in the ABC comedy China Beach alongside Dana Delany. Additionally, she appeared in several series. The actress appeared in independent and made for TV films. Donna Abandando is her first appearance as a leading character in ABC's NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the long-haired secretary of the team from 1993 until 1996. She was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting actress in a drama for each year.
